Lititz Family Practice Associates, The Story
Dr. Elyer's private family practice was purchased by Dr. Paul Hess in 1946. This practice was located at 213 South Broad Street, Lititz. Dr. Hess maintained a solo practice until 1950 when Dr. Reyer Swan joined the medical team. This professional relationship was interrupted in 1952. The Korean War erupted. The need for recruits to assist in the conflict took Dr. Swan to active duty for a period of two years. Upon returning to Lititz, he started his own private family practice at 127 South Broad Street.
In 1956, all practicing Lititz physicians contracted the services of Edmund Schupp, a medical practice consultant from Reading, PA to study, evaluate and offer his recommendations as to whether a partnering of these physicians could be effectively established. A meeting was called at the home of Dr. Swan. In attendance were Drs. Grosh, Cassel, Hess, Swan, Griswald and Mr. Schupp. Through Mr. Schupp's efforts and recommendations Drs. Hess and Swan formed a partnership. The 23 South Broad address was now the home of the merged practices.
In 1956, after completing his military obligations, Dr. Arthur Holder joined the practice and this group became known as Hess, Swan and Holder. As a very successful medical practice, it soon became apparent that the walls at 23 S. Broad Street were beginning to bulge. The group purchased the grocery store adjacent to their building, demolished the store and enlarged their facility.
These three dedicated doctors provided full family practice care to the community. Their services included obstetrical care. They were on the staffs of Lancaster General Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital and Ephrata Community Hospital. They also performed home deliveries. House calls were commonplace for these physicians also. Dr. Swan recalls that it was not unusual to have patients in active labor at the same time in different hospitals. Dr. Hess estimates that he delivered three thousand newborns during his medical career.
Dr. Surry joined and practiced with the team for a number of years. Monthly staff meetings were a regular occurrence and were attended by the entire healthcare team. It was during one of these gatherings that it was decided that a larger, modern facility was definitely needed. Dr. Swan headed the expansion project. The property at 562 West Second Ave. was the perfect location for such a medical facility. Negotiations with George Beamesderfer, the owner of the property, were successful and Hess, Swan, and Holder purchased the tract in 1975. After finalizing architectural and contractual agreements, construction of the new facility began in early 1976 and was completed in June of that year. July 4, 1976 was the moving day. All employees gave a helping hand to see that the job of transporting all files, records, equipment, and furniture was nothing but a memory by the following Monday morning. That Monday welcomed patients to the new facility with the new name of Lititz Family Practice.
In 1980 Dr. Gary Scibal joined the group. In 1982 Dr. Surry resigned to join the family practice group at Wisconsin University. The year 1983 saw Dr. Hess retire and Dr. David Bowers joined the group. Dr. David Superdock was hired in 1990, followed by Dr. Mary Ivy in 1991, nurse practitioner Shirley Bucher in 1992, Dr. William Grosh in 1993, Dr. Marc Russo in 1995, Dr. Cindy-Lou Drummond in 1996 and Dr. Dale Sailer in June of 1998. December 31, 1998 brought to a closure forty years of service for Dr. Holder when he officially retired from the practice.
On January 2, 1996, Lititz Family Practice joined the Lancaster General Medical Group. Lititz Family Practice has been caring for the medical needs of the people of Lititz for over half a century, and plans to continue for many more years.
