Lancaster General Hospital Earns High Marks for Patient Safety

Patient safety is an ongoing priority at Lancaster General Hospital.

“We are constantly striving to improve safety for our patients, visitors and staff,” says Norma Ferdinand, RN, Senior Vice President, Patient Care Services.

Recently Lancaster General Hospital was recognized with a 2005 Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety™. The award was presented by HealthGrades, an independent healthcare quality research company. HealthGrades objectively rates the performance of hospitals throughout the country. This is the second year HealthGrades presented the award. Lancaster General Hospital is one of only 46 hospitals in the country to have received this award both years.

“In making their determination, HealthGrades evaluated our hospital’s performance based on 13 patient safety indicators,” Norma explains. These indicators are established by the national Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

A few of the patient safety initiatives implemented at Lancaster General Hospital include barcoding for medication administration, a falls prevention program and the marking of physical sites prior to surgery.

“We hope awards like this reinforce what many of our patients and their families already know—how highly we value their safety,” Norma says.

Men’s Health Day at the Barnstormers

Join us on Sunday, August 21, as we celebrate Men’s Health with the Barnstormers, Lancaster’s new baseball team. Tickets can be purchased by calling (717) 509-HITS (4487). Our sponsorship provides free admittance to children 12 and under who wear a team jersey. The gates open at noon, with the game starting at 1:35 p.m., so your family will have plenty of time to enjoy a day of baseball and learn about men’s health issues. Children will be able to get their picture taken with Cylo, the Barnstormers’ mascot. We will also be giving away free Cylo bobblehead dolls to the first 5,000 children ages 12 and under.

Coaches’ Clinic

The Lancaster General Orthopedic Center sponsored our first-ever Coaches’ Clinic on Saturday, April 9, at the Lancaster General Health Campus. A panel of orthopedic surgeons started off the day with educational talks on athletic injuries, prevention and treatments. After a lunch provided by DePuy Mitek, coaches attended afternoon sessions on nutrition & wellness, physical medicine & rehabilitation and team & parental behavioral health concerns. The Orthopedic Center offered the clinic as a free service to local high school and college coaches, athletic directors and trainers.
