Women’s Expressions 2007, sponsored by Weis Markets

 

 

 

 

The Outreach Committee of Women’s Expressions 2007, a series of events created and organized by Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital to celebrate the arts and support women’s health services, will bring photographer, documentary filmmaker and author Carolyn Jones to Roschel Performing Arts Center, Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 12 p.m. as part of its 2007 Legacy Project.  The presentation by Jones, “SNAPSHOTS: Capturing Life’s Journey,” is free and open to the public.

 

A Lancaster native and graduate of Manheim Township High School, Jones studied photography at the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University and worked as an assistant to the photographer Hiro before opening her own studio in 1981. Her work has appeared on PBS and in Esquire, Lear’s, Interview, Mirabella and Harper’s Bazaar.

 

In addition, Jones has authored three books of narrative photography: Living Proof: Courage in the Face of AIDS, a vivid and life-affirming book that captures people from all backgrounds, ages and races living with HIV and AIDS; The Family of Women: Voices Across the Generations, a series of powerful photographs and personal narratives that explore the emotional inheritance that passes back and forth between generations and celebrates the bond between women; and Every Girl Tells a Story: A Celebration of Girls Speaking Their Mind, written in collaboration with the Girl Scouts of the USA and capturing a lasting portrait of 85 American girls.

 

Jones is also the director of the documentary “Women…on Family” and is currently working on 100 People: A World Portrait, a collection of portraits of 100 people around the world that statistically represent the world’s population.

Following her presentation, Jones will conduct a workshop for aspiring female photographers who are students at Lancaster County high schools and have been recommended for the workshop by their art teachers. This instructional workshop is designed to educate young women about photography as a career and to inspire young women as they express themselves through the medium of photography.

 

Women’s Expressions is a semi-annual event that reaches out to the community and enhances the quality of life through projects that will meet community needs while celebrating women’s artistic talents. In April, an exhibit of artwork at Women & Babies Hospital by more than 50 professional women artists and female high school students followed by a gala dinner and silent auction of the professional artwork raised more than $114,000 for the Lancaster General Heart Healthy Woman, an education and prevention initiative designed to help women live healthier lives. Proceeds from these activities will also fund the free presentation and workshop by Jones.
