We Are Lancaster General Health

We are Lancaster General Health

Lancaster General Health continuously strives to provide the communities in and around Lancaster County with a system of care that offers nationally recognized clinical quality matched with compassion and caring.

Patients are more engaged in their healthcare and are looking for more personalized options. Alternative medicine continues to increase its appeal and specialty care centers and other non-traditional healthcare providers are emerging.

Advances in medical technology are changing the nature and invasiveness of surgery, they are shortening the duration of hospital stays and shifting treatment of care to the outpatient environment.

As a not-for-profit health system that seeks to meet a growing demand for a diverse array of healthcare services, we continuously invest in our people, in new technology and in expanded facilities.

To reflect that commitment as a regionally focused health system, we strengthened our name to Lancaster General Health. The word “health” was added because it promotes wellness and reflects our shift from only providing hospital care to those who are sick, to a system that helps people lead healthy lives.

A Regionally Focused Health System

Lancaster General Health’s Vision is to deliver an extraordinary experience…every time to our patients and their families. It is a commitment that includes our employees as well – the doctors, nurses, and support staff we depend upon to provide you with the outstanding care you deserve.

By providing our employees with a positive, friendly and healthy working environment, we ensure they have the tools they need to provide you with an extraordinary experience.

Positive, professional attitudes from our staff and physicians not only help us earn your trust, but it enables us attract the talent necessary to continue to provide outstanding care.

“Adding ‘Health’ to our name is recognition that we are your partner for life, not just when you are sick,” says Thomas Beeman, Lancaster General Health President and CEO. “We want to provide everyone with the tools they need to stay healthy, and stay out of the hospital.”

Mr. Beeman says the name Lancaster General Health “is our assurance to everyone we serve that our goal is to provide you with an extraordinary experience, the safest care, and the best possible outcomes. This is a long-term relationship, whether during times of happiness, or difficult times.”

The name better represents our rich culture of service and articulates our values more effectively, he says. “Values on paper are interesting, but they are not useful unless put into practice by every employee, every day. Values lived translate into virtues.”

Our Visual Identity

Along with our new name, Lancaster General Health has adopted a new logo to more accurately reflect our Extraordinary Experience Vision.

“We want to be sure that our promise and vision at Lancaster General Health is consistent with the image we present visually,” says Jan Bergen, Executive Vice President for Strategic Implementation & Chief Mission Officer at Lancaster General Health. “With the change of our name, we are making it clear that we are here to help our community stay well, as well as to treat illness.”

As the premier provider of healthcare to our region, we look to the stars as emblematic of our shared journey. Stars connote excellence, the pinnacle of hope and vision, and the spark of innovation. The three points of our star are comprised of two segments each. The main segments represent three powerful elements that come together to create an extraordinary experience: Behaviors, Processes and Environments.

The smaller segments represent Teaching, Research and Clinical Care, all of which converge to form a visionary and growing health network.

The star’s three colors are derived from the core values at Lancaster General Health. Blue represents heritage, strength and the stability of our long service of excellence; green represents life, and conveys images of the lush hills of Lancaster County; and orange symbolizes the innovation, vision and warmth of the organization we have become.

A new name and logo is only a small part of this initiative. It is a reflection of our Mission and our Vision, a promise from us to always look forward, to anticipate your needs, and to exceed your healthcare expectations.

Extraordinary Experiences

To achieve an extraordinary experience for our patients, our employees focus on Lancaster General Health's mission, vision and values:

Our Mission
To advance the health and well being of the communities we serve.

Our Vision
Create an extraordinary experience…every time.
Our Vision is achieved by providing:
  • An extraordinary place to receive care
  • An extraordinary place to work and learn
  • An extraordinary place to practice medicine

Our Values
Personal Integrity, Quality, Respect for the Individual, Service, Teamwork & Trust

“We are always striving to stay a step ahead of what consumers expect from a healthcare provider,” Jan says.

That also means identifying when a patient isn’t having the experience they should be having, and making the corrections necessary.

“If you’re paying attention to a patient, talking to them, listening to not just what they are saying but how they are saying it, you will be more in tune with signs that suggest the experience for that person isn’t where it should be,” Jan says.

“No matter what your job is at Lancaster General Health, the energy you bring to what you do every day is essential to the realization of our Vision,” she adds. “And when all 7,400 employees bring that positive energy, it creates a much better experience for our patients. It makes our facility much less institutional.”

“Everybody here has an important role in creating an extraordinary experience,” Beeman adds. “We empower all of our staff members to do whatever they need to do to alleviate a problem that a patient or visitor may be having. We will not allow a problem to go unanswered.”

What Are We Doing Next?

We know that our patients’ needs and expectations continually evolve. Today, consumers deserve personalized medicine and care. Our responsibility and promise to our community is to deliver this level of care, and more importantly, exceed expectations.

One recent example of this commitment is our new partnership with Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, in Wilmington, Del., which grew from demands from parents to provide high-quality healthcare for our younger patients.

“We knew that improvements were needed in children’s care at the hospital, and we wanted to provide an atmosphere that parents would feel more comfortable with the care their children receive here,” Jan says.

Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is recognized as one of the nation’s premier pediatric hospitals, and our collaboration ensured that your child will receive increased access to top-quality pediatric care right in your own community.

Our Vision, Your Health

“We have to continue looking for ways to improve how we provide healthcare, and help consumers take more responsibility for their health,” Jan says. “Our Vision is a healthcare system built around wellness and prevention, which helps people live a healthy life.”

That is Lancaster General Health’s Mission, our Vision, and our promise to you, your family and our community.

“At Lancaster General Health, we’ve committed ourselves to a lifelong process, to not only continue to improve our service, but to recognize the future challenges and profound changes coming in healthcare,” Beeman says. “We will always look to provide more efficient, more effective healthcare with outcomes that are both measurable and rich in quality.”
