Venous Disease

Venous disease describes a number of conditions relating to blood vessel impairment. Treatment for venous disease varies and may include lifestyle changes, therapy, inpatient surgery or outpatient surgery. The treatment depends largely on your symptoms and your doctor’s overall evaluation of your situation. Lancaster General Hospital offers many of the latest treatment technologies to enable you to manage venous disease.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) – blood clots that form in deep leg veins and can break loose and move to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism, which causes more than 200,000 deaths a year. DVT can also lead to incompetent valves.

Varicose veins – twisted, raised blue leg veins that may cause fatigue, swelling and aching in the legs.

Chronic venous insufficiency – when injury, scarring or thickening makes it difficult for veins to close normally and maintain healthy blood flow. May cause tired, heavy achy feeling in the legs and swelling in the ankles. When swelling is not controlled, skin problems, such as a venous ulcer or sore, can develop.
