Lymphedema Symptoms & Treatment
The first sign of lymphedema is a visible, measurable swelling in an extremity (arm or leg). The limb may also feel heavy, warm and painful. Elevation changes can cause swelling to increase or decrease. If untreated, swelling will continue to incease and cause the affected area to become hard and difficult to move.
Treatment of Lymphedema
While lymphedema has no cure, it can be treated successfully. The Lancaster General Lymphedema Management Program offers Complete Decongestive Physiotherapy, CDP.
Phase One - Reduction
Intensive treatments to reduce the size of the extremity through:
- Careful skin care
- Manual draining of the swollen limb
- Bandaging the inflamed area
- Exercise
- Education
- Compression garment fitting
Phase Two – Maintenance
Low-intensity, long-term treatment to maintain the reduction in swelling.
- Our patients receive lymphedema treatment three to five times per week, for up to four to eight weeks, depending on the severity of the lymphedema. First visits may take up to two hours and subsequent treatments are one to one and a half hours.
- Successful lymphedema management takes 100 percent commitment from the patient and treatment specialist. We strive to help patients manage their lymphedema independently, which is a lifetime commitment.
