

The Lancaster General Student Volunteer Program is provided during the winter and summer months. High School Junior or Senior students must apply to this program and will be accepted based on the following:

A sincere interest in a healthcare career.

A commitment to volunteer at Lancaster General for 50 hours (minimum).

Grades to support the educational requirements of the selected healthcare career. Provide a recent high school transcript.

Complete a Volunteer Application Form and return it to the Volunteer Services Office at Lancaster General Hospital.
- Proof of childhood immunizations for Measles, German Measles, Mumps, Chicken Pox and Hepatitis B.

Completion of a one-page essay, which explains your specific interest in a healthcare profession.

A letter of recommendation from a healthcare professional or your high school guidance counselor that speaks to your ability and dedication to serving others.

At the end of the programm, completion of an evaluation form documenting your experience

If you are accepted into the Student Volunteer Program, you will be asked to:
- Participate in an all day volunteer orientation program.
- Take a Tuberculosis (TB) test while at the orientation program.
- If you are 18 years of age or older, sign a release form allowing Lancaster General to request a criminal background check.
- Participate in a drug and alcohol screening before the orientation.
If you complete the Student Volunteer Program with a satisfactory experience and apply and get accepted to the Lancaster General College of Nursing & Health Sciences, you will receive a $500 scholarship for the first clinical year, compliments of Lancaster General Hospital.

Letters and brochures are mailed to all Guidance Counselors in area High Schools and Home School Association (CHALC) each Spring and Fall. Check with your Guidance Counselor for this information. For the Summer 2007 program, requirements are due by April 26, 2007. The all day orientation will be held on June 14, 2007. TB testing and a drug screening will be completed before orientation.
Students will be matched with a staff member (mentor) and must complete 50 hours of volunteer service. The students set their volunteer schedule with the mentor. The mentor may be a registered nurse, patient care assistant, physical therapist, radiology or cardiology tech or other professional designation.
You will be notified if you are accepted into the Student Volunteer Program. A representative from Lancaster General Hospital will contact you to schedule an interview before the orientation program.
