Weight Matters While Pregnant

Weight Matters While Pregnant

In Pennsylvania, nearly one in four people—including women of childbearing age—are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. Being obese or overweight during pregnancy can hurt the health of mom and baby.

Pregnant women may face increased risks for pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, pregnancy-associated high blood pressure, cesarean delivery and postpartum infection. Their babies are at greater risk for some birth defects, birth trauma and late fetal death.

If you are considering becoming pregnant and are concerned about your weight, talk to your doctor about starting a diet and exercise program now. If you are already pregnant, ask your doctor what you can do to help keep both you and your baby healthy.
