General Safety Tips
  • Secure the car seat in the backseat facing rearward until the baby weighs approximately 20 lbs. Then turn it around to face forward. Remember, the safest place for your child is in the center of the back seat. Your child should not be in the front seat if you have a passenger side air bag. Keep car windows closed.
  • Baby furniture should be a good sturdy piece of equipment, meeting all safety standards. Crib slats should be no more than 2-3/8" apart. Avoid pillows in the crib.
  • When using the stove, use back burners and turn handles inward, away from the baby.
  • Baby can’t distinguish substances which may be harmful, so pesticides, medicines, liquid cleaners, soaps and other products should always be kept in locked cabinets or out of baby’s reach.
  • If you think your child has swallowed a poisonous substance, call the Poison Control Center immediately. Keep Syrup of Ipecac handy to induce vomiting, only if they instruct you to use it.
  • Baby will be tempted to poke small objects in the holes of a wall socket. Use outlet covers to ensure baby’s safer exploration.
  • Never leave baby unattended in the tub and keep water levels low.
  • Never leave a bucket of water unattended. Small children can drown falling head first into a few inches of water. Keep the toilet seat lid down.
  • Monitor the food baby eats to avoid choking. Avoid whole grapes, raw carrots, nuts, and hotdog chunks. Learn CPR.
  • Plastic bag and balloons can be dangerous. Keep them out of each.
  • Small household items can get caught in baby’s throat. Keep marbles, buttons, batteries, coins and paper clips out of reach.
  • Baby toys should be safe! Too big to swallow, too tough to break, and no loose parts.
