SCU Terminology
Strict bed rest: to remain in bed at all times. This does not allow you to get out of bed to use the bathroom, to shower, or to walk. A bedpan will be used when the bathroom is needed.
Bathroom privileges: Used with ‘bed rest’ but allows patient to get up to the bathroom for short period of time. Does not include the ability to shower. You must have a doctor’s order to shower.
Continuous EFM: Fetal monitoring that is used around the clock to keep a close eye on fetal wellbeing.
NST: A 20-40 minute period of fetal monitoring that looks for two qualifying accelerations in the fetal heart rate and no decelerations. Also monitors for contractions. Shows fetal well-being.
I and O’s: A measurement of a patients fluid intake (oral and intravenous) compared to the patient’s output of fluid (urine, emesis, and blood loss). All patients who have continuous flowing IV fluids will be I and O’s and will see a pan in the toilet to measure the urine output. It is important that the nurse measure your urinary output.
Clear Liquid Diet: A diet that consists of liquids only. The liquids must be ‘clear’ in color. Examples include water, juice (not orange juice), soda, tea, popsicles, gelatin and Italian ice.
Vital Signs: Your pulse rate, temperature and respiratory rate.
