About the Special Care Unit

What are the visiting hours?  There is an open visitation policy here in the special care unit. As long as your visitors check in at the desk and keep their dated stickers on their person at all times, they will be allowed back to see you. However, seeing that this unit is a high risk, intensive care unit, we ask that you and your visitors be respectful of the other patients and limit the noise and activity to what is appropriate. For children visiting, there must be an adult to care for them at all times.

Can my husband/friend spend the night with me? Yes they may! We have a pullout chair bed in each room with linens and pillows for your guest. We also have a cot that is shared throughout the hospital that can be brought to your room if it is available. Again, we ask that you limit your quests to 2 maximum as it is important that you receive the appropriate care and rest during your stay.

Can I keep my own food here? We have a small kitchenette that is available to you. We ask that you label all of your food and the nurse will gladly place it in the refrigerator for you. If you are here long term, we ask that you do not leave food in the fridge past its expiration date.

Can I adjust the temperature in the room? There is a small unit on the wall in your room that allows you to control how warm and how cool your room is. Please ask your nurse if you have any questions.

How do I dial out of the hospital on this phone? Room phones are available for local calls only. Please dial 9 before the number you wish to call. Many cell phone numbers regardless if they are local or not are unable to be dialed from your room. Please note that your phone number to your room is listed on your phone. Incoming calls are allowed.

Can I use my cell phone during my stay? You may not use your cell phones within the hospital walls as it is a hospital policy.

How do I get in touch with my nurse? Upon admission you should have been oriented to your call bell. If you have any needs, please use this call bell to get the attention of your nurse. If there is an emergency while you are in the bathroom, please use the pull cords by the toilet or in the shower.

Can I go outside during my stay? You are not to be going outside of your room unless you have an order from the physician to do so.

Can I bring in electronics from home? You may bring in electronics from home. However, they must be inspected by maintenance prior to use. Please let your nurse know if you have brought anything in from home to be used.

Can I open a window? Due to our hospital’s fire code, you may not at any time open a window.

Where can I get more linens/gowns? Below the tv is a closet that is stocked with extra bed linens, towels, and gowns. If at any time your supply is low, please notify your nurse.

What is that alarming noise? If at any time you hear an alarm going on, please call your nurse. Both the fetal monitor and the IV will alarm to get the nurses attention for a variety of reasons. Often times your nurse will hear the alarm and come in to your room to investigate. However, due to the distance of the room or the availability of the nurse, she may not hear the alarm. Please use your call bell to alert the nurse.

How can I get my husband/friend something to eat? There is a café available to your guests from 8-7:30 during the week. If they wish to choose to eat off of your menu, they may purchase meal tickets at the café.

When will the doctor be around to see me? Ideally, physicians make rounds in the morning. However each doctor has his or her own schedule. It is almost impossible to predict when they will be around to see you. However, you should be seen by a physician daily.
