If a relative has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and you’re anxious about your own risk for breast cancer, you may want to complete a risk assessment or ask your doctor about available genetic testing that can help you better understand your risk. Between 7% and 10% of breast cancers seem to be triggered by inherited gene mutations known as BRCA1 or BRCA2. If you have one of these genes, your doctor may recommend more frequent breast exams and mammograms. You might also be a candidate for drug therapies or other techniques that can reduce your risk of breast cancer.
