Prostate Cancer Screening:
Simple, fast... and lifesaving

Prostate Cancer ScreeningTests that screen men for prostate cancer are simple and they take only a few minutes.

Yet those minutes can be some of the most important you’ll ever spend.

Lancaster General conducts prostate cancer screenings to help men in our community find out if they have the disease. Testing is essential because prostate cancer is curable when detected early.

But there’s a catch: In the early stages, there are no symptoms.

The American Cancer Society recommends prostate cancer screenings for all men over the age of 50, or earlier for men at higher risk of the disease.

African American men and men with one family member affected should be screened at age 45. Men with multiple family members affected should be screened at age 40.

Screening is recommended for men under age 75, with healthcare providers considering the risks and benefits of testing, baseline health and with input from the patient.

Along with a regular annual check-up, a PSA test and a digital rectal examination should be part of a screening that includes a physical examination of the prostate.

For anyone who doesn’t have access to these important tests, Lancaster General partners with local urologists to bring screenings to your neighborhood.

If you can’t afford a prostate-cancer screening or if you have no medical insurance or limited coverage, you may be eligible for a free screening.
