Nursing at Lancaster General is supported and enhanced by many different technologies.
Computers are pervasive. We use stationary and wireless PCs for tasks such as order communication, result retrieval, bar-coded medication administration, electronic medical records, bed management, email, staffing and self-scheduling, safety and regulatory training, and patient education. The entire ER visit is computerized and projects are in the works to automate inpatient and perioperative notes.
Medications are obtained from an automated dispensing device. Wireless telephone use improves staff efficiency and communication. Telemetry nurses carry beepers which alert them to arrhythmias and allow them to view and interpret the rhythm without leaving the patient’s bedside.
Technological innovations have the ability to enhance patient safety, improve workflow efficiency, and promote staff communication. Lancaster General has successfully implemented technological innovations that have provided these benefits.
Lancaster General has received the Most Wired Award from Hospital & Health Network Magazine for four consecutive years (2000-2003). The magazine annually surveys the nation’s health care systems on their use of high-tech communications, and its “Most Wired” status is awarded to what they call “technically savvy” hospitals.
