Each summer, Lancaster General Hospital offers an eight week Student Externship Program which is designed to enable students to approach their professional nursing career with increased confidence.
Students work with our professional nurses in two different clinical sites. Opportunities to observe and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and assist a Registered Nurse with advanced procedures are enhancements to a student’s own clinical experiences.
A Nursing Educator is available to mentor student externs and orientation to Lancaster General is provided. In addition, formal education opportunities and interactive sessions introduce a variety of topics essential to fulfillment of the Nurse Externship role.
The application process for the program begins each October. To be considered as a Student Extern, the following criteria are essential:
- Preferred minimum GPA of 2.5
- Eligibility of senior status
- Copy of Nursing/College transcripts
- Completion of Lancaster General Hospital application for employment or request for transfer if currently employed by LGH
- Current Healthcare Provider CPR certification
- Two completed references from Nursing Instructors
- Completed Externship Program Questionnaire
