Nurses at Lancaster General Hospital have significant opportunities to influence the way in which their profession is practiced. Under the Professional Practice Model, nursing policy is developed and implemented through peer-elected councils. Staff members play active roles in decision-making that have resulted in many positive outcomes such as morale enhancement, self-scheduling, peer/self evaluations, recruitment and retention activities, and a preceptor program.
Five councils comprise the Lancaster General Nursing Professional Practice Model, responsible for goal setting, management, operation, education and performance improvement in nursing service. Each council operates within mandated roles and accountabilities defined within the nursing bylaws.
The Clinical Practice Council oversees clinical practice standards such as patient care, practice and performance. Council members network to develop strategies for change --- strategies that make a difference in the clinical practice of nursing.
The Council also supports the Clinical Ladder Performance Process *, developed to identify clinical expertise and advancing nursing practices. The Clinical Ladder gives both new and experienced nurses the opportunity to move toward higher levels of nursing practice, while remaining at the bedside.
The Nursing Quality Council designs, maintains and coordinates performance improvement activities that assure quality outcomes for patients and meet the healthcare needs of the community. The council promotes continuous process enhancements through the Plan, Do, Study, Act Model of Improvement.
The Professional Development Council, in collaboration with the clinical education staff, facilitates the development, implementation and maintenance of educational programs for nurses at Lancaster General. Educational initiatives are recommended by all councils within the Professional Practice Model.
The Management Council supports the nursing management staff in its efforts to enhance patient care activities within the framework of the organizational mission and goals. Composed of all levels of nursing management, the Council works closely with the Medical and Dental staff on key nursing initiatives.
The Nursing Executive Council integrates professional practice ideals within the governance structure. Led by the vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer at Lancaster General, the committee includes nursing directors and chairs of each council, and is charged with shaping the direction of the nursing department.
The Recruitment, Retention & Staffing Council supports the recruitment and retention of competent nurses, with a focus on staff morale and quality of professional life. The council assists in the maintenance of staffing requirements that support patient care.
