Driving is our biggest privilege and also our biggest liability. Even a small change in vision, memory, reaction time or physical ability can lead to big dangers on the road. If you are worried about your driving skills or have a family member that you are concerned about, you may schedule a preliminary driving safety evaluation performed by an occupational therapist. Evaluations can be completed at the Health Campus, Willow Lakes or Kissel Hill.
The driving evaluation is comprised of two parts. The first part is a one-hour occupational therapy evaluation performed in the rehabilitation gym that assesses a person’s visual acuity, visual perceptual skills, physical function, memory and reflexes for the gas and brake. Part two is an on-the-road driving test that takes approximately one hour and is performed by a certified driving instructor. This test can include adaptive driving tools such as a spinner knob, left foot accelerator and hand controls for the gas/brake.
