Menopause – A New Beginning
What is menopause?
Menopause is a normal part of being a woman. It is the time when women stop having their monthly periods.
What causes menopause?
When you were younger, your body made hormones to prepare for pregnancy. These hormones caused your monthly periods. When menopause begins, your body has begun producing fewer hormones causing your periods to change.
Does menopause happen overnight?
Normal menopause does not happen suddenly. It usually takes three to five years. Menopause is complete when a woman has not had a period for 12 months in a row.
When will it happen?
Every woman is different. Many women start menopause around age 50. Some start in their 40s. A few start in their 30s.
Natural menopause: most women experience menopause gradually over a few years.
Surgical menopause: some women have an operation to remove their ovaries. They experience menopause immediately.
How will I know when I am going through menopause?
Before menopause begins, your body gives you clues for at least one to two years:
- Changes in periods (missed, more frequent, bleeding in between, excessive, less than normal)
- Hot flashes (intense, sudden feelings of heat in the face and upper part of the body that usually last for a few minutes and cause you to sweat profusely. During the night, hot flashes can interfere with sleep.
- Vaginal dryness (causes itching and painful sex)
- Bladder control problems (slight loss of bladder control such as when sneezing or coughing)
- Feeling sad or cranky (you may feel depressed or cry more often)
- Weight gain
- Achey bones
- Forgetfulness
Will all these things happen all at once?
Maybe not. Some women notice many changes. Others notice few. Remember, menopause is different for everyone.
