A hospital designed just for you and your baby
Welcome to a hospital unlike any other in the region—Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital. We are focused completely on the healthcare needs of women, their newborn babies and their families. And, we’ve thought of every detail to ensure that your birthing experience is as comfortable and carefree as possible. Quite simply, we’re committed to delivering the experience of a lifetime.
We’re there for you before, during and after delivery
Visit the Women & Babies Hospital and you’ll immediately sense a unique atmosphere. Our private rooms and meal service are more like a hotel than a hospital. And, our exceptional nurses apply a holistic healthcare approach, caring for you, the whole person—physically and emotionally.
The maternity services offered at Women & Babies Hospital are comprehensive and of the highest quality. It starts during your pregnancy with our extensive selection of childbirth and baby care education programs. Then, when it's time for delivery, we provide plenty of birthing and labor options, along with the most advanced pain relief options. Neonatologists, anesthesiologists and family medicine residents are in-house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week working closely with obstetric providers and other specialists, like perinatologists. Surgical suites are located nearby to accommodate Cesarean births. And, of course, the entire hospital is backed by the vast resources of Lancaster General Hospital.
After you deliver, we provide for your baby’s health and safety with a state-of-the-art security system, infant medical screenings, and the most advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in the county for babies that need it.
And, your care doesn’t end when you leave the hospital. We check on your condition with a follow-up phone call. Lactation consultants and a 24-hour hotline are also available for your questions after you are discharged.
Delivering a personalized birthing experience
At Women & Babies Hospital, we strongly believe that parents are equal members of the healthcare team. That’s why we empower you to create a personalized birthing experience.
Pain relief options
During your pregnancy, your obstetrician will discuss the pain relief options available to you during labor, delivery, and cesarean birth (if required). Prior to your delivery, an anesthesia nurse will call you to answer any additional questions you may have and invite you to schedule a one-on-one educational session regarding pain relief options.
Family-centered maternity care
We want your birthing experience to be filled with warm and precious memories shared with your family and friends. For this reason, we do not limit visitation after you are moved to our Couplet Care Unit. We do request that you only have five people in with you while you are laboring. If, however, you would like to limit your visitation, we have processes in place to help you do that. We’ve made it easy for family members and friends to be close by, by providing many amenities including: indoor and outdoor child play areas; family lounges; a café; a gift shop; and access to a phone and fax machine for those business matters that can’t wait. We also provide overnight accommodations for your support person, and if needed, overnight toiletry kits.
Comfort, privacy and freedom of choice
When you’re ready to deliver, you’ll be in one of our spacious, private labor-and-delivery rooms. Each is large enough to host five people you wish to be present during the birth. Rooms are designed to make you as comfortable as possible, with a whirlpool tub and shower to assist you through labor. We also have laboring balls and squatting bars to help you through this process. Our caring, experienced nurses work with you on relaxation and pain control techniques. In addition, the anesthesia department is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist you with other pain relief options.
Starting your life together
You, your baby and your family will enjoy the first days of a new life together in one of our private post-birth rooms. Each room is spacious enough to accommodate family and visitors. Two nurseries are also located here, as well as a family lounge with a small kitchen area.
After the hard work of delivering a baby, you deserve special treatment, so we pamper you with a massage and restaurant-style meal service. One complimentary meal is provided for a family member during your stay, and other meals for family members can be purchased upon request. A list of available meals is provided on a menu in your room. Meal prices are $11.00 for lunch and dinner, $5.00 for breakfast and for children’s meals.
If you have any questions about breastfeeding, infant care or your own recovery, our caring nurses and lactation consultants have the answers. You may also enjoy the educational programming available on the television in your room. Our Patient Education Channel broadcasts short videos covering women’s health topics and newborn care.
A secure and safe beginning
Your family’s safety and peace of mind is our first priority at Women & Babies Hospital. We’ve taken every possible step to ensure your baby’s well-being and safety, including a 24-hour security staff, an advanced security camera system, and an identification badge and infant protection system. Be sure to remind your family and friends to register at the reception desk to receive required visitor badges.
The most advanced medical care for baby
While most deliveries go exactly as planned, Women & Babies Hospitalis more prepared than any other hospital in the region to care for newborns requiring extra medical attention. That’s because Lancaster County’s only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is located right in our Delivery Pavilion. Here, neonatologists—physicians who specialize in the care of newborns and premature babies—and specially trained NICU nurses provide round-the-clock care for newborns that need extra attention. A 21-bed specialized nursery provides the calm, peaceful environment essential to the proper development of premature infants. For added peace of mind, NICU practitioners and neonatologists attend all high-risk deliveries. For those rare times a newborn has to be quickly transferred, arrangements are made by our neonatal team.
If your baby requires the extra care of the NICU, we do all we can to make you and your family as comfortable as possible. There are private breastfeeding areas, family sitting and visiting rooms, a flexible visiting policy, and overnight accommodations for parents so you are never far from your newborn.
Infant health screenings
To aid in identifying babies at risk, we perform blood testing to screen for a total of 52 metabolic diseases—an exhaustive screening that will give you added peace of mind. In addition, we perform a hearing test on each newborn prior to discharge so that any hearing loss can be detected and evaluated as soon as possible.
Share the joy with friends near and far
With our baby Internet program, even loved ones who are far away will get a glimpse of your new addition right away. We provide a digital camera so you can capture images of your newborn and create your own personalized Web page to email to family and friends right from the hospital.
Shop from the comfort of your room
If you or your baby need a prescription filled during your hospital stay, we’ll be happy to order it for you from our LifeCare Pharmacy located at the Lancaster General Health Campus. Other medical supplies can also be ordered from LifeCare Pharmacy, including a full selection of breastfeeding supplies, breast pumps, baby slings, books and more. For your convenience, your supplies and medications will be delivered right to your room.
