This X-ray procedure identifies the cause of breast problems when you have symptoms such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge. It can also detect cancer prior to noticing symptoms.
Usually two views of each breast are taken—one from the side and one from above. This allows the radiologist to identify abnormalities such as very small lumps, areas of calcification or other changes that occur before you can feel them.
All screening mammograms performed at Lancaster General facilities are reviewed by a board-certified radiologist and the R2 ImageChecker technology. This computer-aided detection process adds a measure of confidence for women, and further improves the likelihood of early breast cancer detection.
If the mammogram identifies an area of concern, the radiologist may request a breast ultrasound, a breast core biopsy or further diagnostic mammography.
