What can I expect during a genetic counseling session?

A genetic counseling session is a meeting with a genetic counselor and/or Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist.  You will be asked questions regarding your family’s medical and pregnancy histories.  This enables us to assess if your baby may be at increased risk for certain problems that run in your family.  The session can also be used to determine if medications or exposures you have had will increase the risk for problems in your unborn child. In general, an overview of genetics, chromosomes, DNA and inheritance patterns will be discussed. Various screening and diagnostic testing options that are available will be discussed on an individual basis.  In this way, genetic counseling can help a couple in their decision making process.
