Genetic Counseling

Genetic counselors are specially trained healthcare professionals who provide information in a non-directive manner.  A genetic counselor does not tell a patient what to do, but advises them of their options, including the benefits, limitations and risks of genetic testing and/or screening.

Genetic Counseling includes a meeting with our genetic counselor and/or Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist to assess risks for certain genetic disorders that may run in your family. During this meeting, your medical and pregnancy history and that of your family will be discussed. This information will be used to provide suggestions for screening and diagnostic testing during your pregnancy.

Pre-conception Counseling

Pre-conception counseling is a meeting with a genetic counselor and/or Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist that occurs prior to pregnancy.  The session is used to provide information regarding potential risks for a future pregnancy and to clarify a person’s options prior to conception.  If appropriate, the patient may receive suggestions for screening tests or suggestions for which exposures that she may wish to avoid prior to and during a pregnancy.  These recommendations may be used by the patient to make decisions regarding future pregnancies.

Non-Stress Testing

Non-Stress Test or NST is the evaluation of the baby’s heart beat and any uterine contractions with an Electronic Fetal Monitor. NST is a painless and relaxing way to check the baby’s well being and to determine that the placenta is still providing the baby with adequate oxygen. Non-Stress testing is usually initiated after the 28th week of pregnancy.

Testing options for our patients to screen or detect chromosomal problems and/or gauge development include:

  • Amniocentesis
  • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
  • First Trimester Screening
