What is a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist?

Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are doctors with the following experience and education:

  • An undergraduate college degree
  • Medical School degree
  • 4-year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • 2-3 year fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

During fellowship training, these doctors gain valuable education and practical experience related to obstetrical, medical and surgical complications of pregnancy with special emphasis on ultrasound diagnoses of fetal development and abnormalities. Because of this specialized training, maternal-fetal medicine specialists can provide care or consultation for both a mother and her unborn baby throughout a complicated pregnancy.
