Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my appointment last?

Routine ultrasound appointments last approximately 45 minutes.

Pre-conceptual counseling lasts approximately 45 -90 minutes.

Genetic counseling with first trimester screening can take up to two hours.

Non-Stress Tests are a minimum of 20 minutes, but usually no longer than 45 minutes.

What do I need to bring for my appointment?

We request that you bring your insurance card with you to your visit. Please check with your insurance provider to see if you need pre-authorization or a referral from your primary care provider.

Can I bring someone with me during my visit?

Family members and friends are welcome to accompany you to your appointment. Most of our areas allow for at least one additional person. Unfortunately, we do not have child care facilities available so we encourage you to not bring young children. If this cannot be avoided, we request that you bring another adult to help supervise any children that may accompany you. We withhold the right to restrict the number of visitors at any time to allow for the safety and comfort of the patient and the staff performing the testing.

Can I eat or drink anything before my appointment?

You may eat and drink regularly before your appointment.

Do I need a full bladder for any tests performed at Maternal Fetal Medicine?

No, a full bladder is not required for any testing performed at our office.

Can you determine the gender of my baby on ultrasound?

It is possible after the 16th week of pregnancy to determine if a baby is a boy or girl. However, this is not the case for every patient and is not guaranteed.

Can I bring a video tape/DVD to record my ultrasound?

Unfortunately, video taping of any kind, by the staff performing the test or by the patient/family or friends is not permitted. If we are able, we will be happy to provide you with a digital image from the ultrasound on the day of your appointment.
