Helping Women to Take Action to Protect Their Hearts

Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of American women and that more women dieannually from heart disease than men? Heart disease, in fact, kills more women in a year than all cancers combined.
At Lancaster General, we are committed to empowering women with the knowledge and tools they need to prevent, detect and treat heart disease.

By making healthy lifestyle changes, women can have a profound impact on their health. That is why Lancaster General became HeartCaring-certified.
HeartCaring is a national certification program that helps health systems improve cardiac health through physician education and community outreach that is focused specifically on teaching women the risk factors, symptoms, prevention and treatment of heart disease.
As a HeartCaring health system, we educate family practice, OB-GYN and emergency medicine physicians about the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in women. We also provide in-office tools to assist women in making positive, healthy choices to prevent heart disease.
According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart itself. Coronary artery disease is the major cause of heart attacks. It develops slowly over time and can often be prevented by practicing healthy habits including:
-
knowing and controlling your blood pressure
-
exercising regularly
-
quitting or avoiding smoking
-
getting tested for and controlling diabetes
-
knowing your cholesterol and triglycertide levels and keeping them at recommended levels (learn more about cholesterol screening in this issue LG Woman)
-
eating lots of fruits and vegetables
-
maintaining a healthy weight
