Digital Mammography and the
Center for Breast Health
On June 2, 2008, the Suzanne H. Arnold Center for Breast Health opened its doors on the Lancaster General Health Campus. Several of the services previously offered at the former Breast Care Center at Women & Babies Hospital have moved to the new Center, providing women with convenient access to comprehensive breast care.
The new Center offers women personalized care with all services conveniently located on the first floor. “We want women to feel comfortable when they come here,” explains Lynn Fantom, Clinical Manager at the Center. “Every detail from the calm surroundings to the availability of Breast Care Coordinators who provide patients with assistance and support, was planned with the patient experience in mind.”
Comprehensive Breast Care
The Center for Breast Health offers women comprehensive breast care including:
-
Screening and diagnostic digital mammography
-
Cancer risk evaluation and genetic testing
-
Breast health education and counseling
-
Connection to breast cancer treatment and support groups
Services are provided by a multidisciplinary team of breast health experts including nurse navigators, genetic counselors, radiologists, surgeons, radiation and medical oncologists, mammography technologists and a dedicated support staff.

Digital Mammography
The Center for Breast Health is equipped with advanced digital mammography technology available
for screening and diagnostic mammography. Unlike a screening mammogram, a diagnostic mammogram utilizes additional imaging techniques and is performed to further evaluate a concern identified on the screening mammogram or the discovery of a lump or irregularity. Digital mammograms offer several advantages over traditional film images.
“Digital mammography is a phenomenal improvement over film screen mammography for younger patients with dense breast parenchyma (tissue),” explains Jennifer Kegel, MD, Section Chief of Breast Imaging.
The speed at which digital mammograms can be read is also important. “Our diagnostic scans come up right away on the computer screen so our radiologists can read them, and the images can be easily magnified for a closer, more detailed look,” continues Fantom.
“Women who are undergoing a diagnostic mammogram are, understandably, eager to receive answers as quickly as possible. Digital technology enables us to provide same-day results, bringing quicker resolution and treatment options to our patients.”
Diagnostic mammograms are only offered at the Center for Breast Health. Screening mammograms are available at the Center for Breast Health, at the Health Campus, Women & Babies Hospital, and at our Norlanco, Kissel Hill, Columbia and Willow Lakes facilities.
