Caring for the Men in Your Life: Easing Back Pain

Easing Back Pain

Back pain. It may start with a jarring movement or it can build gradually, ranging in intensity from mild to severe, radiating anywhere from your cervical, or neck area, down through your hips and legs. The type of pain can vary as well, from sharp aches to dull throbbing to sudden spasms.

What Causes Back Pain?

Men typically attribute back pain with work, exercise or sports-induced activities. The most common causes of back pain include nerve or muscular problems from injury or stress; degenerative, or age-related, conditions like herniated cervical or lumbar (low back) discs; and arthritis.

In rare conditions, back pain can signify a more serious condition like kidney stones or cancer. When the pain is sudden and severe or lasts longer than six weeks, encourage your man to see a doctor, who may order a diagnostic test such as an x-ray, CT scan or MRI.

Get Active

Contrary to popular belief, light activity is more beneficial to back pain than bed rest. Performing everyday activities, such as walking, keeps blood flowing to the affected area, reduces muscular tension and inflammation, and stretches and strengthens the body. When it comes to exercise for back pain, one size does not fit all. That is where the Lancaster General Spinal Health & Rehabilitation Team can help.
