Lancaster General Going Tobacco-Free in 2008
Lancaster General is making a New Year’s resolution that it intends to keep.
Beginning January 1, 2008, Lancaster General facilities will become tobacco-free as part of the BreatheWell initiative, joining three other Lancaster County hospitals to eliminate use of all tobacco products on its properties. This change will affect everyone: employees, patients, visitors, physicians and students.
“Cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States,” says Thomas Beeman, President & CEO, Lancaster General. “As the county’s leading healthcare provider that treats the onerous health effects of smoking, we view our BreatheWell campaign as our obligation and our opportunity to create a healthier environment for the thousands of patients, employees, caregivers and visitors who come to our facilities each year.”
Recognizing that smoking is a difficult addiction, Lancaster General has developed enhanced efforts to help employees and community members quit smoking, including smoking cessation classes and nicotine-replacement therapy products.
