Healthwise: Magnet Hospital

What Does Being a Magnet Hospital Mean?

Lancaster General Hospital earned a four-year recertification as a Magnet Hospital for excellence in nursing services.

The Hospital is one of only eight hospitals in Pennsylvania and 225 nationwide awarded this status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), making it one of the most coveted designations in nursing. Lancaster General Hospital was first named a Magnet Hospital in 2002.

“Lancaster General Hospital’s nursing staff has a long-standing tradition of leadership, clinical excellence, collaboration and concern for patient safety,” said Thomas E. Beeman, Lancaster General President & CEO. “Magnet redesignation is a testament to the high standards which the ANCC requires, and which our patients deserve.”

The Magnet Recognition Program was developed by the ANCC to recognize healthcare organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and uphold the tradition of professional nursing practice.

Magnet Hospitals demonstrate greater recognition for the profession of nursing, a work environment that honors the highest standards in nursing practice, and an employer committed to fostering professional growth. The Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive.
