What is the difference between a screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram?
Women who have no symptoms of breast cancer receive screening mammograms. This exam is typically your first test and is the one that you should schedule annually. A screening mammogram can assist your doctor with the detection of breast disease.
However, if you or your doctor notice a breast lump or lumps, or if a screening mammogram shows abnormal areas, then a diagnostic mammogram is used as a more extensive test.

Diagnostic mammograms are only available at Women & Babies Hospital and require a referral from your doctor.
Annual screening mammograms are recommended for women age 40 and older. If you have a family history of breast disease, consult your healthcare provider about when you should receive your first mammogram.
