Common Allergy Triggers
With the arrival of spring comes warmer weather, the blooming of flowers and trees and for many, the onset of allergy season.
An allergic reaction is triggered when a normally harmless substance comes in contact with the body and the immune system overreacts. It can be mild, such as minor congestion, or intense enough to interfere with your quality of life and make it hard to complete daily activities.
The most common allergens include pollen from trees, grasses, weeds, molds, dust mites, animals, foods, medicines, feathers, insect stings and cockroaches. With lots of trees and plants, Lancaster County often has a high pollen count, causing trouble for people who suffer from asthma and hay fever.
Insects such as bees, hornets and wasps are also more active during the spring and summer. The venom from their stings can cause allergic reactions in many people.
Treatments for allergies vary.
The first step is to talk to your doctor and make sure your symptoms are caused by allergies and not by another medical condition and to find the best course of treatment. Some patients simply avoid the allergens, some take medications, and others undergo a series of allergy shots to try and desensitize them to the allergen.
