Dr. Eichenlaub, New Medical Director
Women & Babies Hospital

Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital is a unique place in the region for women’s healthcare and new Medical Director John Eichenlaub, MD, plans to continue finding ways to keep it that way.

“I think it’s phenomenal that we have a hospital dedicated to women’s care right here in Lancaster County,” Dr. Eichenlaub says. “Considering its success during the first five years, I think the community appreciates how rare of an entity this is.”

That’s why one of his goals as medical director is to work with Charles Castle, MD, Senior Vice President of Operations, to enhance its service to the community.

“We are always looking to introduce more specialties and subspecialties to women, so that whatever services they need, they know that they can find it right here,” Dr. Eichenlaub says.

Dr. Eichenlaub, a Pittsburgh native and graduate of Notre Dame and Case Western universities, came to the Lancaster area in 1994 because he was attracted by the high level of care he saw here. In 2004 he started his own obstetrics and gynecology practice, with Dorothy C. May, MD, joining the practice in 2005.

“I thought this would be a wonderful place to raise a family, and where I could have a greater impact,” he says. Today he resides in Lancaster County with his wife and three daughters.

As medical director, Dr. Eichenlaub will oversee the safety of patients and procedures to make sure the highest level of patient safety is maintained. He has been heavily involved with the hospital since the beginning, serving as department chairman for five years. So he has seen where Women & Babies Hospital started and understands its vision for the future.

Women & Babies will continue to provide the most advanced technology to maintain its high level of service. That includes the introduction of a new electronic medical records system that will provide fast access to a patient’s records, as well as to the latest info about procedures and medication to ensure that everyone is on the same page and that the best care is being administered. “Things can change quickly, and this system will challenge us to think about every step along the way,” he says.

“We have far exceeded all of our expectations during the first five years,” Dr. Eichenlaub says. “We will be looking at expansion in the future to meet growing volume and capacity.”
