When 4,500 people attended the recent Women & Babies Hospital fifth birthday celebration, it reminded Charles A. Castle, MD, just how important the hospital is to so many Lancaster area families.
It’s an image Dr. Castle is taking with him in his new role as Senior Vice President of Operations at Women & Babies Hospital.

Dr. Charles A. Castle is taking over for Jan Bergen, who has been named Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Care & Chief Mission Officer for Lancaster General. |
“The strength of this hospital is the wonderful staff, dedicated to providing the best care possible,” Dr. Castle says. “It’s a telling testament that we’ve been entrusted in the delivery of more than 20,000 babies. It’s a humbling honor.”
The dedicated staff complements a state-of-the-art facility that provides skilled care for women and their newborns in a relaxing atmosphere, that includes a special care unit dedicated to high-risk pregnancy. “By reducing the number of transfers, we help more women and newborns stay closer to their home and family,” Dr. Castle says. “That’s a huge asset to the community.”
Dr. Castle, an obstetrician with OB/GYN of Lancaster, has been involved with Women & Babies since its inception. He served as Medical Director since 1999 before becoming Senior Vice President in January.
“This is a wonderful time to take on the responsibilities of Women & Babies,” Dr. Castle says. “Our team is exploring ways to improve care for patients, including expanding the maternity service area and increasing the number of delivery and postpartum rooms.”
A computer-based patient information system is also planned for 2006, providing a seamless and secure transmission of electronic medical records between patients’ caregivers to ensure continuity of care. “We will be one of only five to ten hospitals on the East Coast using this technology,” Dr. Castle says. “It’s going to be a big plus for our patients and their caregivers.”
Dr. Castle knows the atmosphere of care, comfort and cooperation means so much to the women who’ve entrusted their health to Women & Babies Hospital. He plans to continue improving those things that already make the hospital a special place.
