The Lancaster General HealthCare Foundation improves the quality of life for individuals in our Lancaster community through numerous programs and initiatives. Because of the generosity of many individuals, corporations, and foundations we are able to provide wellness-focused programming that educates, heals and supports people of all ages leaving a lasting impact on the health of our community. Below are examples of our community impact:
Carter’s Corner is an interactive and child-oriented space that offers for children waiting at the hospital during the laboring/delivery process the opportunity to create crafts for moms and new siblings. The area promotes stimulation, creativity and individuality for children of all ages as they prepare their first gifts for mom and baby. With a diverse choice of crafting options, Carter’s Corner makes families’ experiences at Women and Babies even more special by allowing children to enjoy themselves as they create a unique and personalized gift for their mom and new sibling. Carter’s Corner was established by Todd and Megan Brown in memory of their son, Carter James Brown, who was born still on 7/5/05 at Women and Babies Hospital. His older brother, Andrew, loves to make crafts and lovingly made some for Carter in anticipation of his arrival. Carter’s life is honored as a new lifetime bond between siblings is born each time a craft made for and received by a new baby.
The Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) provides registered nurses to go into the homes of first-time, low income mothers to conduct weekly, bi-weekly or monthly visits from pregnancy until the child’s second birthday. The average age of women enrolled in this program is 18 with an annual family income of $17,500. NFP outcomes include reducing the incidence of preterm births and low birth weight, smoking cessation and reduction, breastfeeding initiation, immunizations, and an increase in pregnancy spacing. The Nurse Family Partnership program is funded through a partnership between Lancaster General Hospital, Department of Public Welfare, and the United Way.
