BreatheWell

Lancaster General To Become a Tobacco-Free Environment

Starting January 1, 2008, all Lancaster General facilities and properties will be completely tobacco free.

The BreatheWell initiative is a continuation of Lancaster General’s mission to improve the health and well-being of our community. We are joining two other Lancaster County hospitals and will prohibit the use of all tobacco products at Lancaster General Hospital, Women & Babies Hospital, Lancaster General Medical Group practices and other facilities throughout the health system.

This change will not only affect our employees, but all patients, visitors, physicians and students as well.

“Cigarette smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States,” says Thomas Beeman, President & CEO, Lancaster General. “As the county’s leading healthcare provider that treats the harmful health effects of smoking, we view our BreatheWell campaign as our obligation and our opportunity to create a healthier environment for the thousands of patients, employees, caregivers and visitors who come to our facilities each year.”

Recognizing that smoking is a difficult addiction, Lancaster General has developed enhanced efforts to help employees and their spouses, patients and community members quit smoking, including smoking cessation classes, nicotine-replacement therapy products and other means.
