Lancaster General College: Meeting the demand for healthcare professionals
Nationwide, a shortage of qualified healthcare professionals is creating challenges for hospitals and healthcare facilities.
As the need for qualified nurses and technicians continues to rise, Lancaster General College of Nursing & Health Sciences (LGC) is taking steps to address those shortages and ensure that the healthcare needs of the community are met.
“There is a great need for more healthcare workers and nursing is the program that is growing the most,” said Margie Lamberson, Senior Development Officer at the College. “Over the past few years, our enrollment has risen dramatically, from 200 students to our current enrollment of 600 in all programs of study.” Plans are also in the works to further increase enrollment and to add new programs of study.
LGC is a two-year private college dedicated to healthcare education, and was recently accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Students receive education in one of several specialties, such as nursing, diagnostic medical sonography, nuclear medicine technology or radiography, along with general education college level courses.

Dancing for Dreams
As the enrollment at the College grows, so does the need for support for its programs and its students. One way you can help is by joining us at the first Dancing for Dreams event to benefit the College, which will swing into the Lancaster Host Resort on Saturday, March 24. The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a gala dinner and will be followed by a performance and social dancing.
Six local celebrities – none of whom have had ongoing formal dance training – are partnering with professional dancers to learn a ballroom dance. The celebrities and their dance instructors are practicing throughout the winter and will take to the stage and perform for you at this special gala event to benefit the College.
Dancing for Dreams will feature Kim Lemon from WGAL; David Simons, DO, a Lancaster anesthesiologist; State Rep. Bryan Cutler; Kay Jay Miller, Central Penn Piranha wide receiver; Lisa Horst, LPGA golf pro, and Daleela Dodge, MD, Lancaster surgeon. Celebrity judges will offer commentary and the audience will have an opportunity to vote for their favorites in several categories.
“Our goal is to make this the event of the season,” says P.J. Winchell, RN, event co-chairperson and 1983 graduate of the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. Rehearsals are being videotaped and will be featured at the event showcasing each performer’s progress. A DVD of the event and some previously unshared moments will also be produced and available for purchase.
There will also be exhibition dance performances by nationally accomplished professional dancers, who will join our local stars to round out the show.
The post-show dance party will give everyone an opportunity to try out their dancing shoes. Local dance instructors will be on hand to encourage the audience.
“There are many health benefits to dancing, so the tie to the College is perfect,” Margie says. “It’s good for us physically and emotionally. Whether you are a dancer, you just like to watch great dancing we hope the community will come out and support the event and healthcare education at Lancaster General!”
