Armstrong co-workers Kevin Brown and William Patterson put safety and health information to good use while on the job. |
Healthy workers are a key component to any successful company. When good workers sit on the sidelines due to illness or injury, it’s a burden on both the employer and employee.
Lancaster General’s Corporate Health Management programs help local businesses maintain a healthy, productive workforce and create safer working environments.
“We are here to help workers avoid injuries and illness that can cause absenteeism,” says Scot Larrimore, Lancaster General Employer Relations Specialist. “Healthier employees means lower bottom-line health costs for local companies.”
Whether it’s a family-owned business or a large corporation like Armstrong World Industries, Inc., Lancaster General can provide customized corporate health management, which includes corporate wellness programs, occupational health screenings and occupational injury evaluation and treatment.
Corporate Wellness
Unhealthy lifestyles account for 70 percent of America’s medical costs. That translates into $200 to $400 per employee in annual healthcare costs.
“Our goal is to help employers improve the health of their workforce,” says Catherine Newkirk, Wellness Educator. “When an employer emphasizes wellness, they set the stage for employees to take ownership in their personal health. We provide businesses with the tools necessary to focus on preventive health.”

Since 1992, Lancaster General Corporate Wellness has collaborated with employers to identify the primary health risk factors that affect their organization. Corporate Wellness follows up with strategic planning to provide targeted programs for the at-risk population and health education to keep all workers safe and healthy. Comprehensive services offered through Corporate Wellness include:
-
behavior modification programs (weight management, smoking cessation, stress management)
-
educational programs (such as wellness lectures, CPR training)
-
full-service wellness programs, including Health Risk Assessments
-
health screenings (such as blood pressure, cholesterol)
-
health fairs and interactive learning opportunities
“We would like to see more employers work toward a comprehensive wellness program that will enable them to receive an actual return on their investment,” Catherine says. “We are able to provide pieces of a wellness program or all components.”
Occupational medicine services
Many employers depend upon our pre-employment testing to ensure a new hire can meet job demands.
“We are here to assure companies that they are hiring people who can perform their jobs safely,” says Alan J. Hay, MD, MPH, Occupational Medicine Medical Director.
Our corporate occupational medicine services include:
-
pre-employment physicals
-
comprehensive state Department of Transportation services
-
drug and alcohol testing (pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return to duty and follow-up)
-
ancillary testing, such as x-ray, EKG, PFTs and audiograms
-
immunizations, such as flu or hepatitis
-
rehabilitation services (physical therapy, occupational therapy, aquatics, industrial rehabilitation, FCEs)
-
work site evaluations
“We provide a workload simulation to see if employees can meet the physical demands of a job,” Scot says. “Our tests help employers avoid putting an unfit employee at a high risk for injury.”
“The expertise Dr. Hay and his team bring is extremely valuable to us,” says Brent W. Davis, Environmental Health and Safety Manager, Armstrong Floor Products Operations. “Dr. Hay is willing to come in, get the information he needs, get his hands dirty and give us valuable advice,” Brent says.
Armstrong utilizes numerous occupational health services, including injury treatment, medical case management, employee examinations, vaccinations and annual safety day events. Dr. Hay recently helped Armstrong revise its heat stress policy and procedure.
By touring an employer’s facility, our occupational health professionals can determine ways to reduce or eliminate potential hazards and improve ergonomics. “The number one injury we see is lower back injury,” Dr. Hay says. “There are many ways we can help employers avoid these costly injuries.”
When accidents happen
Even with the best occupational safety plan, accidents and injuries can still happen. So it’s important to have a healthcare partner that understands your business and can treat and evaluate occupational injuries so that employees return to work when they are physically ready.
“We are chosen by the employer, but we are here to serve the needs of the employee as well,” Dr. Hay says. “We strive to earn the employee’s trust by evaluating, treating and protecting them in ways a personal physician often is unable to do, simply because of their unfamiliarity with the specific conditions and demands of the work environment."

“I think our people feel they are treated with their best interest in mind and in accordance with good medical standards of care,” Brent says.
Lancaster General provides a detailed written review of a patient’s condition, so employers have a complete picture of whether or not he or she can return to regular work or to a modified duty position.
Brent appreciates Dr. Hay’s responsiveness. “It’s pretty close to having an on-site occupational medicine department,” he says.
Lancaster General works with its partners to create or update modified work programs so injured employees can return sooner in a limited capacity as they recover. It’s another way Lancaster General helps protect local businesses and their employees with a comprehensive corporate health management programs.
“There are few entities locally that can provide as many beneficial occupational medicine services as Lancaster General,” Brent says.
