Dexa scan

Bone Density Screening Now Offered in Elizabethtown

Now the best method of testing bone density and catching osteoporosis in its early stages is conveniently located for residents of northwestern Lancaster County.

A bone mineral density test, called a DEXA scan, is available at Lancaster General–Norlanco, 424 Cloverleaf Road, Elizabethtown.

It’s a fast, non-invasive, low-dose x-ray performed on your lumbar spine and hip that helps predict your risk for a fracture.

Since osteoporosis can progress slowly with no symptoms unless there’s a fracture, bone density scans are the best early detection method. They’re especially recommended for women:

  • over age 65
  • under age 65 with identified risk factors
  • postmenopausal with previous fractures
  • considering therapy for osteoporosis, or
  • who have been on hormone replacement therapy for prolonged periods.
DEXA scans are also offered at Osteoporosis Center locations at Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital and Walter L. Aument Family Health Center in Quarryville.
