A Letter to the Community

A Letter to the Community

by Thomas E. Beeman

It is truly an honor to be part of Lancaster General health system—our community’s health system. Each of you is an important stakeholder in our tradition of providing the highest level of compassionate quality healthcare to the people of our community for more than 110 years.

This past year of accomplishments and honors for Lancaster General is one that we share with the entire community:

  • We opened the Lancaster General Orthopedic Center, which serves as a leader in the early identification, prevention and treatment of muscle and bone problems. Our patient satisfaction scores in this specialty are among the highest in the country, evidence of the hard work of our physicians and caregivers.
  • U.S. News & World Report named us among the nation’s best hospitals in five specialties. It’s the second year in a row that we were honored for our heart care and heart surgery, as well as treatment of hormonal disorders. This year we were also honored in orthopedics, urology and ear, nose & throat disorders. Formal recognition by U.S. News acknowledges that LGH offers key medical technologies, achieves quality outcomes and maintains excellent nursing proficiency.
  • Lancaster General Hospital’s patient safety record was rated among the nation’s best, according to HealthGrades®, a national organization that independently evaluates hospital quality for consumers, corporations, hospitals and health plans. We also received this prestigious award in 2004, making us one of only 46 organizations in the United States to achieve this national recognition two years in a row.
  • More people trust us with their healthcare than ever before. For example, in the past 12 months, Lancaster General Hospital’s Emergency Department & Trauma Center treated more than 80,000 patients and more than 4,800 newborns were delivered at Lancaster General Women & Babies Hospital. I believe that the responsibility entrusted to us—to care for our fellow human beings—is profound.

This edition of Generally Speaking also focuses on other exciting developments, including:
  • Children’s Health Unit
  • Community health improvement efforts
  • Board members and medical/dental staff leadership listings

On behalf of our medical and dental staff, our 6,000 employees and the boards of directors of Lancaster General and Lancaster General Hospital, thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

 Thomas E. Beeman

President & CEO, Lancaster General
