Professional biographies of Lancaster General’s Executive Leadership
Thomas E. Beeman, President & Chief Executive Officer, Lancaster General
Mr. Beeman holds more than 34 years of experience in the healthcare field and is responsible for the leadership of the Lancaster General health system. Prior to joining LG, he served at Saint Thomas Health Services as its President and Chief Executive Officer, and the Senior Vice President for Hospital Operations and Executive Director of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives and a member of the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States. He is also a Captain in the United States Navy Reserve. He is a PhD(c) at Vanderbilt University where he has taught System Theory. He holds a master’s degree in Hospital Administration from Widener University, a master’s degree in Health Education and a bachelor’s degree in Community Health Studies from St. Joseph’s University. His most recently published book, Leading From Within was published in 2005 by Providence Publishing.
Jan L. Bergen, Executive Vice President for Strategic Implementation & Chief Mission Officer
Ms. Bergen has lead responsibility for establishing and executing the health system’s strategic imperatives and has administrative responsibilities for: strategic and business planning; business development, including marketing and sales and public relations, facility and clinical program development, external relations, physician relations and physician partnerships. As Chief Mission Officer, Ms. Bergen is responsible for assuring that the services delivered by Lancaster General are consistent with the organizations mission and are accessible to all people in the communities we serve. Before joining Lancaster General Hospital in 2000, Ms. Bergen served as Senior Vice President for Jefferson Health System’s Bryn Mawr Hospital, a 400-bed acute care facility in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Ms. Bergen also served as President and CEO of Jefferson Health System’s Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital, a 200-bed freestanding rehabilitation facility in Paoli, Pa. Ms. Bergen possesses more than 25 years of healthcare experience including management of hospitals, ambulatory centers and rehabilitation centers. Ms. Bergen holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Lafayette College and has completed graduate course work in business administration and social work.
Marion A. McGowan, Executive Vice President and COO, Lancaster General
Ms. McGowan joined Lancaster General Hospital in 1991. She came to Lancaster from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, where she worked for 10 years. In 1992, Ms. McGowan was appointed Assistant Vice President, Cardiovascular Services and in 1993 she was appointed to Vice President, Cardiac & Pulmonary Services. From 1994 to 1999, Ms. McGowan served as the Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services for the Lancaster Health Alliance (today known as Lancaster General). In 1999, she was appointed to President and Chief Executive Officer of Brandywine Hospital, a 190-bed community hospital in Chester County, which at the time, was affiliated with Lancaster General. Ms. McGowan returned to lead Lancaster General Hospital in 2000 as the Chief Operating Officer. Since 2005, Ms. McGowan assumed the responsibility as Chief Operating Officer for the Lancaster General responsible for system operations including acute and outpatient care, home care, skilled care and physician services. Ms. McGowan earned a master’s degree of public management/health administration from Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelor’s degree of nursing from Carlow College.
Jay Bucher, President, Lancaster General HealthCare Foundation
Mr. Bucher is responsible for executive leadership of the HealthCare Foundation, a community-led organization which advances the culture of philanthropy within the Lancaster General health system, and provides additional funding for research, new and expanded services, clinical care and educational opportunities for medical staff. Mr. Bucher joined Lancaster General is 1995 as Vice President of Development. Prior to joining Lancaster General, Mr. Bucher held the position of Senior Vice President of Development with CoreStates Hamilton Bank (now Wachovia). Mr. Bucher holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Gettysburg College and an American Bankers Association degree from Bucknell University.
F. Joseph Byorick, Senior Vice President & Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Byorick also serves as Corporate Treasurer for Lancaster General Hospital and its affiliates. He joined Lancaster General Hospital in 1972. During his 35 years, Mr. Byorick has managed all phases of hospital accounting, reimbursement, and finance, and has been involved in the acquisitions and divesture of related organizations, payer negotiations, and financial strategy development. He has served as Lancaster General Hospital’s Chief Financial Officer and as the Treasurer for Lancaster General since January 2001. Prior to his most recent appointment, Mr. Byorick held the position of Vice President, Fiscal Affairs since 1997. He earned his master’s degree in business administration from Shippensburg University and a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster.
Lee M. Duke, II, M.D., Senior Vice President & Chief Physician Executive*
Dr. Duke is responsible for creating a positive and contemporary climate for medical affairs across our system. He is accountable for facilitating medical staff planning and development, physician leadership development, clinical program improvement, outcomes management, patient safety, technology and innovation, resource management and clinical effectiveness.
A critical-care staff physician with Pulmonary Associates of Lancaster and member of the LGH Medical and Dental Staff since 1991, he is a former health system trustee. Dr. Duke also leads physician credentialing and graduate medical education. Dr. Duke holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Virginia and became a Doctor of Medicine upon graduation from the University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Geoff Eddowes, Senior Vice President of Operations for Lancaster General Hospital & Senior Vice President of Post-Acute Care for Lancaster General
Mr. Eddowes is responsible for daily operations at Lancaster General Hospital since September 2007. He also leads the health system’s post-acute care services, including long-term care services, home care services and serves as staff liaison for Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital. Prior to joining Lancaster General in March 2006, he was past President and CEO of Luthercare, a continuing care retirement organization based in Lititz. He also served as the Vice President of Operations for the American Retirement Corporation in Brentwood, Tenn., and as Vice President of Operations for the Willow Valley Retirement Communities. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Temple University and was a past recipient of Central Penn Business Journal’s Forty Under 40 program, which annually recognizes 40 men and women under the age of 40 for their notable successes and demonstrations of strong leadership both within and outside of their chosen field.
Norma J. Ferdinand, MSN, RN, Senior Vice President, Chief Quality Officer & Chief Nursing Officer
As the health system’s Chief Nursing Officer since 1999, Ms. Ferdinand has lead clinical and patient safety efforts including Nursing, Medication Management & Safety, Care Management, Quality & Clinical Decision Support, Patient Safety and Accreditation & Quality Standards. In September 2007, she was also named the system’s Chief Quality Officer. Prior to her current appointment, Ms. Ferdinand served at the Senior Vice President of Operations and Chief Nursing Officer for Lancaster General Hospital. She previously served as Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services, as Director of Care Management and Cardiothoracic Surgery at Lancaster General Hospital. Ms. Ferdinand joined the hospital in 1983 as a cardiothoracic surgery clinical nurse specialist and in this position she facilitated the implementation of the Cardiac Surgery program. She has more than 30 years of nursing and critical care experience. With a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, Ms. Ferdinand is currently a Doctoral of Nursing Science candidate at Widener University.
Leo Gilmore, Senior Vice President & Chief Information Officer
Mr. Gilmore leads all information services and clinical information management for the health system. His responsibilities include all operational services and development of the strategic direction for information technology. He also serves as Lancaster General’s Chief Innovation Officer and is Chairperson of the Visiting Nurse Association Board. Prior to joining Lancaster General in 2003, Mr. Gilmore served as Senior Vice President for Christiana Care in Delaware from 1986 to 2003. He was responsible for Information Services, telecommunications, hospital operators and the health system’s answering service. Mr. Gilmore led the effort to create the Delaware Health Information Network, the first state initiative to create an “electronically connected healthcare community.” Prior to joining healthcare, Mr. Gilmore worked for ICI Americas for 10 years and Campbell Soup Company for five years in various operations research and IT positions. Mr. Gilmore holds a master’s degree in mathematics/operations research from Drexel University.
Jerome I. Gottlieb, M.D., Senior Vice President of Physician Practices & President, Lancaster General Medical Group (LGMG)
Dr. Gottlieb is responsible for all aspects of the day-to-day operations for Lancaster General Medical Group’s medical practices. His responsibilities include oversight of patient care, financial performance, customer service and relationships with Lancaster General affiliates. Previously, Dr. Gottlieb practiced adult and adolescent psychiatry. He maintains a private forensic and consultative psychiatric practice. Dr. Gottlieb has served as Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Lancaster General Hospital and Medical Director for the Partnership of Behavioral Health, Lancaster Behavioral Health Network at Quest Behavioral Health. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Washington & Jefferson College and his medical degree from Georgetown University, where he completed his psychiatry residency and served as Chief Resident.
Robert P. Macina, Esq., Senior Vice President, Chief Administrative/Legal Officer & Corporate Secretary
Mr. Macina provides strategic legal advice and guidance to the LG Board of Trustees and the senior management team, and provides or oversees all other legal services necessary for the effective operation of the health system. Bob received his bachelor’s degree in 1976 from Georgetown University, his master’s degree in business administration in 1980 from Bernard M. Baruch College, City University of New York, and his juris doctor degree in 1980 from New York Law School. Mr. Macina was formerly a partner with the law firm of Greenberg Traurig in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., practicing in the area of healthcare law. In this capacity, he represented hospitals, physicians, and other healthcare providers in strategic, operational, and regulatory transactions. Prior to joining Greenberg, Traurig, Bob was the Director of Legal Affairs for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc., where he was responsible for managing the activities of a 13-attorney legal department for the state’s largest health insurer. Bob is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, New York, and Florida, and is board-certified in Health Law by the Florida Bar.
Regina Mingle, Senior Vice President of Human Resources & Chief Leadership Officer
Ms. Mingle leads the health system’s human capital development and talent management, including succession planning and expansion of a comprehensive leadership education program.She also serves as a liaison with Lancaster General College of Nursing & Health Sciences. Since 2002, Regina served as the Vice President of Human Resources for the Jefferson Health System in Radnor, PA. She holds more than 20 years of clinical and patient service experience in not-for-profit hospitals and systems. As vice president, she was responsible for the management of all human resource functions including: recruitment, compensation, employee relations, employee benefits, and policy. She held strategic responsibility for systemwide health and welfare employee benefits. Regina earned a master’s of management degree in business administration from The Pennsylvania State University, and a bachelor’s degree from Drexel University.
André W. Renna, Senior Vice President, Ambulatory Care & President, Lancaster General Services Business Trust
Mr. Renna is responsible for Lancaster General’s extensive network of ambulatory facilities, including the Lancaster General Health Campus and others throughout Lancaster County. Mr. Renna joined the Lancaster General health system in 1988 in the position of Director of Management Engineering for Lancaster General Hospital. In 1989, he became President of Lancaster General Services, the for-profit division of Lancaster General. In 1999, Mr. Renna was named Senior Vice President of Business Development for the health system. Mr. Renna holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and operations research from Syracuse University, and a master’s degree in business administration from The Pennsylvania State University.
Susan Wynne, Senior Vice President, Business Development
Ms. Wynne oversees Planning, Marketing & Relationship Management, Public Relations & Corporate Communications, Physician Relations and other business development functions for the health system. Wynne holds more than 30 years of healthcare marketing and business development experience, and prior to joining LG served as Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Public Relations for Main Line Health, a member of the Jefferson Health System. In this role, she was responsible for the market growth of its acute-care hospitals, ambulatory sites and other business entities. Wynne received her bachelor’s degree from Mount Saint Mary College and her master’s degree in business administration from The Pennsylvania State University.
