Children's Health
Caring for the future
Children are special—and they have special healthcare needs. That’s why Lancaster General Hospital has an entire floor dedicated to the care of infants, children and young adults up to age 17. As the only hospital in Lancaster City with a dedicated pediatric unit, we’ve perfected the art of caring for young people by combining the latest pediatric medical technology with compassion and understanding for the special needs of children and their families.
A Kid-Friendly Environment
To provide the very best healing atmosphere for our young patients, we look at healthcare from a unique viewpoint—through a child’s eyes. When you walk onto the pediatric care floor at Lancaster General, you’ll immediately notice the cheerful, kid-friendly décor with brightly colored artwork. Toys, books, videos and video games are available to help ease anxiety and promote recovery. Even the meal service is personalized for each child with orders taken by a friendly host or hostess that visits each room.
Doctors and Nurses Trained in Pediatrics
Lancaster General provides you and your child with access to a broad range of pediatric specialists. The nurses are also something special. They are specially trained in pediatric advanced life support and trauma care. Our doctors and nurses understand a child's needs are different from those of an adult, and use equipment and instruments designed especially for kids. They understand how to ease a child’s fears and how to explain complex procedures in simple terms, so that you and your child will understand and know what to expect. The staff also realizes that sometimes your child just needs a hug or a caring hand to hold.
Focused on the Family
We understand that your child’s healthcare is a family matter and we view parents as an essential member of the healthcare team. We want you to feel comfortable asking questions and participating in decisions regarding your child’s care. You play an important role in your child’s recovery, so we encourage you to spend as much time as possible with your child and offer unlimited visitation to parents. We’ll also provide the necessary accommodations for one parent to spend the night with your child. We know that sometimes other obligations may make an overnight stay impossible. Not to worry—you can rest easy knowing that Lancaster General’s caring staff is ready to meet your child’s every need.
