Dates for 2009 Summer Unit: June 1 - August 7, 2009
Orientation is held the first few days. During the rest of the program, the group meets about 10 hours each week for educational seminars. The remainder of the time is spent visiting patients and completing written assignments. Each student will be at the hospital a combination of days (8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.), evenings (4:30 - 10 p.m.) and nights (10 p.m. - 8 a.m.) for clinical experience. Some weekend time will be involved. The average week involves about 44 hours of time commitment.
The tuition for a summer unit is $500. Upon acceptance, a non-refundable deposit of $150 is due. The balance of the tuition is due the first week of the unit unless other arrangements are made with the supervisor.
The requirements for the summer unit typically include:
- Learning Contract – three or four learning goals for the unit.
- Verbatim or Critical Incident Reports (7) - These reports are tools to reflect on pastoral visits. Three or four of these reports will be presented to your peer group. The remainder will be turned in to your supervisor for written comments and/or individual discussion.
- Case Study – an in-depth examination of your pastoral care of a patient or family member.
- Reflection Papers (weekly) – written reflections on interactions with patients, family members, staff and peers to focus on what you are learning.
- Genogram – a look at your family of origin in order to gain understanding of how your personal history impacts your pastoral care.
- Reading Reports (2) – you will read two books and reflect on what you learned and how you can apply the learnings to your pastoral care.
- Chaplain Reports (each shift) – a listing of persons to whom care was given.
- Individual Supervision (weekly) – individual time to process your learning.
- End-of-Unit Evaluation – written reflection on what you have learned throughout the unit.
