Residency Program
The 2008-2009 Residency Program is Full.

The CPE residency program is a 12-month commitment from August 18, 2008 to August 17, 2009. During this time, the residents complete three units of CPE. Between units, when they are not attending educational seminars, the residents will have additional time to integrate conceptual learning into their pastoral practice. By the end of the program they will have a clear understanding of the role of a chaplain in a healthcare setting. The knowledge gained, skills developed and personal growth experienced will help prepare them for certification -- if that is the direction they choose.

The curriculum in the residency program builds upon the students’ prior CPE experience and theological training. Relationship building is accentuated as the residents form a learning community with each other, become part of the inter-disciplinary healthcare teams, provide care to patients and family members and mentor CPE interns. The first unit focuses on Pastoral Theology. The second unit focuses on Pastoral Psychology and the focus of the third unit is Pastoral Functioning.

The residents’ schedule includes day, evening and night shifts. On average, the resident works about 46 hours per week. Some weekend and holiday time is involved.

In recognition of the time commitment involved in a residency, the residents are paid a competitive salary for the year ($27,500 for '08-09), divided into bi-weekly checks. The residents are offered medical and dental insurance at nominal rates. Additionally, they receive 24 days of time off, such as holidays, vacations, sick time, and personal days. As much as possible, time off is not to interfere with educational seminars.

Upon acceptance, a non-refundable deposit of $100 is due. There is no further tuition or other fees for the residents.

We are currently accepting applications and interviewing appropriate candidates for the final opening. If you are interested, please apply soon so you can be considered. Thank you.
