Across the nation, one in 200 people experience homelessness each year. Locally, it is estimated that more than 2,000 residents are considered homeless, relying on local organizations for assistance with basic needs like shelter and medical services. A new program launched by Lancaster General Health and its community partners is helping to provide health education to the homeless and those who care for them.
When it comes to sexual assault, minutes count when gathering evidence needed to prosecute the offender and protect the victim. Lancaster General Hospital is the only county hospital staffed with sexual assault forensic examiners trained to treat adult assault victims (ages 13 and up).
Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition affecting 15 percent of children in the U.S. In Lancaster County, the condition is a significant health concern, with the rate of obese and overweight children slightly higher than the national average. To help combat the obesity epidemic, Lancaster General Health and its Roseville Pediatrics practice launched a pilot program to address the issue of childhood obesity and to increase the number of children living at a healthy weight.
Culinary traditions play an important role in Lancaster County. To help share these recipes and create a healthier community, The Wellness Center at Lancaster General Health, in collaboration with community members, is releasing its third cookbook in a series highlighting healthy recipes. The new cookbook, available in July, features African American meals that reflect the rich heritage of food and tradition passed down through generations in our county.
Lancaster General Health, in collaboration with the Lancaster Health Improvement Partnership (LHIP), has released a new report regarding the Amish and their options to accessible health services. The findings, based on focus group research, outline how Lancaster County Amish view healthcare, barriers to necessary care and whether cultural beliefs impact prevention and early detection.
