Dear Neighbor,

We are pleased and proud to share with you Lancaster General’s Community Benefit Report for Fall 2008.

Upon its founding in 1893, Lancaster General Hospital’s mission was to deliver the best possible care to anyone in need, regardless of their ability to pay. More than a century later, the hospital has evolved into a not-for-profit health system dedicated to its current mission of advancing the health and well-being of the communities we serve.

Fundamental to that mission are our efforts to address our community’s health priorities. We collaborate with other community organizations and healthcare providers, working together as partners for a healthier community. That is how we achieve the greatest good.

When it comes to fostering a healthy community, we recognize the leadership role we play in improving the overall well-being of individuals and families. In addition to caring for people when they’re ill, we strive to help them achieve their optimal level of health through all stages of life.

This report outlines the progress we and our partners have made during the past year toward addressing our community’s four health priorities:

  • Increased access to healthcare
  • Reducing the incidence of domestic violence
  • Healthy weight management
  • Prevention and reduction of tobacco use

This edition also contains several stories about Lancaster General’s Financial Assistance Program. Last year, more than 4,000 people with little or no health insurance received free healthcare, or discounts on their medical bills through the program. Examples of this program are featured in this report.

We encourage you to share your thoughts with us and welcome your input and ideas to make our community commitment even stronger.

 Yours in good health,
