Revitalizing Neighborhoods & Lives
James Street Improvement District
In 2003, Lancaster General and Franklin & Marshall College developed the James Street Improvement District (JSID), resulting in a renaissance of economic and neighborhood vitality.
Lancaster General’s ongoing, annual investment of $150,000 complements the support JSID receives from several businesses, non-profit organizations and individuals. Led by a 22-member board of community members, the JSID’s priorities focus on “clean and safe” living by strengthening neighborhoods, stimulating economic development, and promoting the District and the community.

Armstrong Development
Working with EDC Finance Corporation, Lancaster General and Franklin & Marshall College also partnered on the transformative redevelopment of the 47-acre Armstrong World Industries site.
Located between Liberty Street and the Amtrak railroad corridor, the project will expand both campuses. Lancaster General has acquired 15 acres and is soliciting community input to determine what kind of development will best advance healthcare in our community.
This development will create approximately four square blocks of new construction – not to mention new jobs (see chart below). Lancaster General plans to keep the acreage it owns on the city’s tax rolls so that it continues to generate revenue.
