Focus Area #1: Heart Health
Wellness & Prevention

Keeping people heart healthy is where we start. Our staff is in the community, teaching people about heart disease risk, prevention and treatment through Lancaster General programs and our Speakers Bureau. From the
LEARN weight management program to the implementation of the
Heart Healthy Woman program, there is something for everyone.
Shapedown is a comprehensive weight management/healthy eating initiative for youth and teens. It enlists help from the whole family and, since 2004, has decreased kids’ BMI and promoted lasting positive choices. Freedom from Smoking is available to the entire community while another tobacco cessation program is offered to patients at Lancaster General Hospital and Women & Babies Hospital.
Additional outreach programs include Over 50 & Fit, Qigong, Tai Chi and multiple options for yoga. And in our stress management class, thinking, moving and eating well are taught as key components to healthy, balanced living.

Diagnosis & Treatment
Nationally recognized care rests close to home at Lancaster General Heart Center. To ensure needed services are within our community, the Center offers a
Catheterization Lab –offering innovative techniques 24/7 – and a full range of complex open-heart procedures performed by skilled surgeons.

Our survival rate is one of the nation’s highest while our charges are some of the nation’s lowest. Add advanced technology and highly trained technicians, and it’s clear Lancaster General is working diligently to meet the community’s ever-growing need.
Recovery & Support
Heart patients finish strong with Lancaster General’s Cardiac Rehabilitation program, one of the region’s largest and most comprehensive. At our Health Campus, each person’s rehabilitation plan is customized and includes the educational, nutritional and psychological support to transition from monitored care to self-care. Rehabilitation is proven to extend life and improve its quality. The people of Lancaster County deserve nothing less.

More Procedures, Lower Costs, Better Outcomes |

In 1983, the county’s first open-heart surgery was performed at Lancaster General Hospital. More than 20 years and 15,000 open-heart surgeries later, we are still leading the way. Lancaster County’s first CT for cardiac diagnosis and first mechanically assisted heart pump (or VAD)* are now part of our heritage, along with 100,000 cath lab interventions and 35,000 procedures to treat the heart’s electrical system.
