Dear Neighbor,

Welcome to our Spring 2007 Community Benefit Report. At Lancaster General, we practice an approach that cherishes the value of health. This requires a focus that spans the wide spectrum of human need – from physical to spiritual and from prevention to rehabilitation. As a non-profit health system, it also requires a devotion to efficiency and collaboration for the greater good of Lancaster County.

Five Focus Areas

1. Heart Health
2. Neurological Care
3. Fighting Cancer
4. Orthopedic Services
5. Women’s Health

In a transition from our Fall 2006 Community Benefit Report, this update outlines the comprehensive and collaborative ways in which Lancaster General promotes community benefit through focused areas of care. Our heart, neurological and orthopedic services make it possible for Lancaster Countians to have advanced, nationally recognized care in their own community. We seek to expand our cancer program through a seamless, patient-centered model of care. And in response to growing community need, our women’s health services have grown to cover the diversity of issues Lancaster County women face throughout their lifetimes.

These signature service lines address an array of healthcare issues. Through the care provided at our hospitals and outpatient centers by our clinical staff and physicians, we are working to assure that there are no gaps in our community’s healthcare system. These services make it possible for us to fulfill our Mission: “To improve the health and well-being of the communities of Lancaster.” This Mission guides every decision we make and reflects our understanding that access to high-quality services is not only a healthcare issue, but a community benefit issue.

Our recently approved Strategic Plan 2010, titled Journey Toward Greatness and built with input from community leaders, physicians and our employees, is also rooted in community benefit. It provides the frame-work for how Lancaster General seeks to collaborate with other organizations that share our commitment to improving health.

Feedback we received from our Fall 2006 Community Benefit Report told us you value a greater understanding of how a healthcare system can – and should – contribute to its community. We hope this spring update adds the next piece. Thank you for your ongoing support, and for growing along with us as we strive to make Lancaster County one of the healthiest communities in America.

Yours in good health,
