Lancaster General: By Your Side

“I still had a lot more living to do.”

– Tim Kashner, Ephrata

When Timothy Kashner arrived at Lancaster General Hospital following a massive heart attack, his only chance for survival was a ventricular assist device (VAD). Lancaster General Hospital was the first in the county to perform this procedure and Tim was the first recipient.

On Oct. 13, 2005, Tim received the implant. He awoke two days later and learned what doctors had done to save him. Today, there’s little to suggest that this energetic 42-year-old Ephrata man was within moments of dying. “I’ve got my angel, Lisa Ann…and a second chance at life.”

“I was determined to walk again.
And I did.”
– Joel Hiestand, Ephrata

Joel Hiestand is a take-charge kind of guy. After his stroke, he set his sights on recovering. And he did, winning first place in an antique car show. Joel used his hobby as part of his rehabilitation – along with his sense of humor. His approach worked; he was also named Stroke Survivor of the Year.

“They really worked me, but I gave them a hard time, too,” he says. “I called my therapist Megan ‘The Sarge.’ They’re a great group at the Health Campus. They even have a driver’s program. Getting my license back after my stroke was one of the happiest days of my life.”

For outstanding care,
the choice is clear.

6,000 people a year choose Lancaster General for outpatient orthopedic surgery. Judy Youngeberg was one of them. “They do all the little things that let you know they’re looking out for your comfort and well-being.” That personal attention is made possible by an experienced team whose complete focus is orthopedic care.

“I have nothing but great things to say,” Judy told us. “At my follow-up, I was almost 100 percent back to normal.” From our first-of-its-kind Orthopedic Center to the Health Campus, we’re right by your side.
