Adaptive Driving Evaluation Program

Driving a vehicle is important to any person's independence. The Lancaster General Driving Evaluation program helps determine if an individual with a disability can safely operate a vehicle with or without special driving aids. Our services are appropriate for individuals with conditions such as: stroke, head injury, amputation, bone or joint disease, Cerebral Palsy, and Spina Bifida.  It is also used with elderly patients who have demonstrated functional activity decrease and, therefore, family and/or physicians are concerned in reference to patient's ability to continue driving.

Evaluation:
A complete evaluation is needed to determine if the person can drive safely. The evaluation takes place in two (2) parts.  The first part is an "occupational therapy evaluation" OTE Form (to be completed by physician) and the second part is a "behind-the-wheel evaluation".

Occupational Therapy Evaluation
This includes evaluation of:

  • Visual screening
  • Physical skills
  • Attention and concentration skills
  • Reaction time
  • Recognition and understanding of road signs and traffic regulations
  • Occupational Therapy Evaluations can be completed at Willow Lakes Medical Services of Lancaster General, Kissel Hill Health Center of Lancaster General, and at the Aquatic and Physical Rehabilitation Center at the Lancaster General Health Campus.)

    Part B:  Behind-the-Wheel Evaluation

This portion of the evaluation can be completed if patient has a current driver's license or active permit.  Otherwise, evaluation by the State (if appropriate, pending occupational therapy evaluation results and doctor's recommendations) is needed.

    Behind-the-Wheel evaluations address a person's ability to:

  • Operate vehicle controls
  • Act quickly amd accurately behind the wheel
  • Obey traffic laws and regulations
  • Behind-the-Wheel evaluations will also help determine the need for special equipment and/or follow up training sessions.

Behind-the-Wheel evaluations can be completed by Isabel Mumma from A-I Mumma's Driver Training School.
